Makita DA3010F 4 Amp 3/8-Inch Right Angle Drill with LED Light Order Now

I use a 18 volt cordless drill most of the time but there are situations where a corded drill can provide a lot more extended power than any tool powered by batteries. With the new lithium-ion batteries the safety overload protection limits peak power even more and a 3/8" corded drill provides much better performance and costs half as much as an additional lithium-ion battery.

I use the Makita in tight spaces where the small size and right angle drill head are a big help. When the drill stalls it is also a lot easier to control than a big stud drill and a lot less dangerous. I use it mostly to cut 8-1/4" holes in TJI for duct runs using one of the Hole Pro hole cutters.

Hole Pro X-230 Kit: 1-7/8" to 9" Infinitely Adjustable Twin Blade Hole Saw Cutter 3" 4" 5" 6" 7" 8" 9" Hole Wood Sheetrock Plaster Fiberglass Plastic MDF Cement Board. Use ¼ Torque of Hole Saw to Cut Twice As Fast

We use the 12" and 17" models as well but the X-230 has a smaller shield that fits between the TJI flanges better.

The LED light is very helpful at lining up a drill bit or a screw head. One of those things that is easy to take for granted until you go back to using a drill without the light.

The only way to make the Makita better would be to give it a rotating head. With the right angle head the screw needs to be driven at a 90 degree angle and if a different angle is needed then I have to go back to a regular drill.

The keyed chuck is not bad but the drill would be a lot better with a keyless chuck. It slows the work down when you have to pull up the cord and use the key to make a bit change and drill keys get knocked loose and have to be replaced. If I had to choose between two drills and only one had a keyless chuck that would always be my pick. Currently all the right angle corded drills use a key chuck even though their 3/8" and even some 1/2" corded counterparts from the same manufacturers are available with keyless chucks.
